Hi everyone, today I am doing a review of the movie Tick Tick Boom. Tick Tick Boom was a very highly anticipated movie musical. It was released it theaters and then a week later was released on Netflix. Shortly after it came onto Netflix me and my friend Emilie watched it on Netflix together.
The Story
This was originally an off-Broadway musical written by Jonathan Larson. Jonathan Larson is an amazing musical writer. Some may say one of the greatest. He wrote a musical that I love called “Rent”. It is one of our favorite musicals of all times. “Rent” ended up changing the world of Broadway. “tick, tick…BOOM!” was about Jonathan Larson writing the musical “Superbia” which was the project he was working on before Rent. He had never had success with “Superbia” and was trying to notice. A big part of the movie was also Johnathan’s debate between continuing to try with theater or get a normal job.
The Reviews
The reviews were all really good. People were saying that it was the best movie of the year. They were also saying that the story was incredible and Andrew Garfield who portrayed Jonathan Larson was incredible. They also said the story was supper inspirational. Finally, everyone said that the directing was really good.
My Expectations
After seeing all the good reviews, I had pretty high expectations for this film. First of all, I was expecting that the film would be about Jonathan writing “Rent” because that is what he is most known for. I was also expecting there to be a lot of “Rent” references in it. I was also expecting to possibly have a new favorite musical after this. I was so excited to see this movie.
The Music
I was a huge fan of the original soundtrack. It is one of my all-time favorite soundtracks. However, the music was not as good in the movie. I did not like Andrew Garfield as the lead in this. I did not like his voice. In the original musical my favorite song is “30/90”. However, I did not like it at all in this movie. It was the first song in the movie as well so it did not make the best first impression. The original was so much better, the music got a bit better as the movie went on though. I loved Vanessa Hudgens performance in this though. as well as Alexandra Shipp. They had the best voices in the film.
Celebrity Cameos
There are about 50 celebrity cameos in tick, tick… BOOM! However, I could only recognize one of them in the movie. There were some people who were only in one scene, so I assume that it was a cameo. However, I did not know what the names of them were. The only one that jumped out at me was Lin-Manuel Miranda who also directed the film.
Story
This is one of my favorite parts of the movie. It was a very heartwarming story about how if you are determined you can succeed. Also, it was interesting learning about Johnathan Larson’s life. However, I thought the stories was a bit slow. There was not a lot of exciting parts in it. I also was disappointed that the story was not about writing Rent like I was expecting .
Characters
The characters were my favorite part. I feel like every character was interesting and added to the story. I liked seeing how all the characters portrayed a big part in Jonathan’s life.
In conclusion the movie was a bit disappointing. I think that this is because I had such high expectations. I would not mind rewatching it now that I know what it is about.
