Hi everyone, today I am writing a review of a musical I went to see over the summer called Hair. I went to the Old Globe in San Diego. If any of you know me in real life you probably know that I’m a huge Broadway musical fan. Watching musicals just makes me really happy so I was looking forward to seeing this.
Background of the story
Hair is about a bunch of hippies in the 50s. They are campaigning against the Vietnam war. They are trying to advocate for peace and love. The musical is all about their lives, families, and campaign efforts .
Expectations
I had done some research before I saw the musical, so I had some expectations going into it. First, I was expecting this to be a very adult show. I heard that there was a lot of drug use in it. I also heard that this was the first musical that showed nudity, so I was expecting a naked scene. I also listened to the soundtrack before I went, and I did not like it that much. After listening to the soundtrack, I was a bit nervous that I would not like the show.
Music
The music is a lot better live. The opening and closing numbers are amazing. The songs are really catchy and make you want to sing and dance. I like the music a lot more now and still listen to it to this day. In fact, I am listening to it while I write this!
Costumes
I loved the costumes for the show. They were all very bright and had a lot of flowers on them. A lot of the people in the audience dressed up as well. I didn’t but kind of looking back I wish I did.
Standout parts
All of the actors walking down at the beginning of the musical was really cool. I was sitting right next to the staircase so I could see them really well. There was also super good dancing in it. I am a dancer myself, so I always appreciate a good dance number.
Deleted scenes
They deleted the naked scene from the show. I was kind of surprised by that because that is what made the shell famous in the first place. Also, I heard that usually they invite audience members upon stairs for a big closing number but in this version, they did not do that. I’m assuming that it was probably because of COVID19.
Overall, I really liked the show. It was one of my favorite ones that I’ve seen. If you ever get the chance to see a production of Hair.
Thanks for giving Hair a chance. When I first saw this play it exposed me to many different things I hadn’t been exposed to in my sheltered life. Please keep writing.
Thanks Mark!
I loved the show too, you really captured the essence of it!
