Peggy Porschen Cakes in the Belgravia section of London, England, has garnered an international reputation as one of the most photogenic of restaurants in the world. But, is it good? When I was in London over summer vacation I decided to go over there and find out for myself. It was a hot day, and stopping for a leisurely cup of tea and cupcake seemed like a typical London thing to do, so why not?
As you can see from the photos, the café has a pink theme. I love pink so of course I had to go there. Everything is pink: the teapots, the tea cups, and even the check. Also, almost all of the customers were women, which I did not expect, but suppose it made sense given the pink theme. There were only two or three guys there, one of which was my Dad, and he did not seem to mind at all. You could also almost call it the United Nations of cake, since it seemed like everyone there was from a country other than England – we were from the United States, of course, but others were from Japan, China, and Germany, at least.
As we had our tea and cake, a line formed outside the shop. To say this place was popular with tourists would be an understatement. However, the downside of the popularity was that we felt somewhat rushed by the staff, who kept volunteering to take away our plates, even though we were not yet done.
The menu included a range of teas and cakes.
This is what we ordered:
Vanilla Salted Caramel Cupcake
I had a Vanilla Salted Caramel cupcake. As you can see form the picture, it was a medium sized cupcake topped with a whipped frosting, covered with nutty flakes and a sweet chocolate filled with caramel. The cupcake itself was vanilla, witha very salty caramel filling. A bit too salty but otherwise the cake was delicious.
Summer Berry Iced Tea
It was a hot summer day, so I thought I would order an iced tea instead of a hot brewed tea. I love iced tea, and ordered the Summer Berry. It was very fruity and had refreshing berries in bottom of the glass. All in all, I would say it was the perfect drink for a hot day.
Strawberry Champagne Cake Slice
We also got a strawberry champagne cake slice. This was somewhat disappointing, and we had hoped for something a bit more unusual.
Almond Orange Cake
This was our favorite. The cake had a light orange flavor, with almond accents.
Spiced Apple Tea and Earl Grey Tea
Our hot teas were spiced apple tea, and Earl Grey tea. My Dad gave the review of the spiced apple tea and he said the spice and apple flavors were very mild, and not as present as he had expected. As for the Earl Grey tea, it was rated as fair, lacking some of the preferred floral notes that can distinguish an Earl Grey.
All in all, Peggy Porschen Cakes provided a relaxing interlude on a busy day in London. It had a unique and fanciful decor, and the cakes and tea were pleasant enough.
