“tick, tick… BOOM!” Musical Review

“tick, tick… BOOM!” Musical Review

A few weeks ago, I went to “tick tick.. BOOM!” in San Diego at Cygnet Theater. Cygnet is my favorite theater and I have been going for years.

Cygnet Theater

Cygnet is a professional theater in San Diego. They are doing a season of all musicals this year. You can find the link to the theater here.

Summary of Show

“tick, tick… BOOM” is a musical written by Johnathan Larson about his life. Jonathan Larson was an aspiring playwright. The musical was about his struggles and him trying to decide if he should keep working at trying to create a show.

My Personal Connection

I have a huge personal connection with this show. The first connection that I have is that I am a big fan of Johnathan Larson. He wrote one of my favorite musicals “Rent.” He unfortunately died the day before “Rent” went to Broadway. There also is a Netflix movie version of  “tick, tick… BOOM!” and I previously did a review of it. . You can my review of it here: Netflix Tick Tick BOOM movie review.

Opening Night

There were complimentary cocktails and snacks for opening night. I got a cocktail with vodka, pineapple, and blue curacao. It was good but strong.

Best Song

I liked a lot of the songs. My favorite was “Why.” It was about Johnathan reminiscing on the times he had with his best friend. It made me cry. It was Christy’s favorite as well.

Similarities Between Show and Movie

There are many similarities between the  show and film. The first similarity is that the storyline was the same. The other similarity is that the soundtracks are similar.

Differences Between Show and Movie

There were also some differences between the movie and the live show. The biggest difference was that in the show there were only three actors. The actors played different roles. This made the show funny. It was one of my favorite parts of the show. In the movie there was a full cast, so everyone had their own parts.

What did I like better?

I will pretty much always, except for a few exceptions, say that I like live shows more than movie adaptations. I just love being in a theater and being immersed in live theater. I also like how they made the live show different from the film. And all the actors especially AJ Rifael playing Johnathan were amazing.

Conclusion

In conclusion I loved the show. I liked how fun it was and it was a super fun time. I would definitely go again.
