South of Nick’s- Mexican Cuisine Review

South of Nick’s- Mexican Cuisine Review

This is my fourth instalment of my round- the world restaurant cuisine series. For this review I decided to go to South of Nick’s which is a Mexican restaurant in San Diego. I went to try it on my spring break with my dad and grandma.

Check out the first review  Kosher Chinglish, the second Le Petit Prince, and the third Kassi Beach House

Style of service

This was a bit more of an upscale restaurant. This is because the prices were a bit higher for some menu items. Others were reasonably priced.

Specialty food/beverage items on the menu

There were a lot of ethnic foods and beverages on the menu. Some of the menu items include margaritas. tacos, and enchiladas.

What we tried

We tried a lot of different delicious things: complimentary chips with 3 different dips, chicken flautas, enchiladas, and tacos.

South of Nick’s Restaurant Review

My favorite thing that we ordered was the chicken flautas. I had never tried them before. They reminded me of taquitos except for smaller and crunchier. I also liked the complimentary chips and dips. My favorite was the Bean dip. My dad and grandma liked the tacos and enchiladas that they got. The ambiance was very nice.  I liked the decorations inside. It had a neutral color palette.  Finally, the service was good. We were served fast, and the server was friendly.

From your personal experience and/or what you have learned in class, did the restaurant seem culturally representative or not?

I do think that this restaurant is culturally representative. The first reason I think this is that there were a lot of tequila-based cocktails. I know that tequila is popular in Mexico. The next reason I think this restaurant is culturally representative is that they had a lot of tacos which I know are popular in Mexico. Finally, there was a lot of salsas in the dishes on the menu. I know from personal experience that there is a lot of salsas at Mexican places.

What did you learn about this culture and their foods from your visit?

The first thing I learned from the visit to this restaurant is I learned about chicken flautas. I had never heard of them or tried them before.  Another thing I learned was that seafood is popular in Mexico. I always thought of beef, chicken, and pork as protein. I never thought of fish as being popular. However, there were a lot of fish options on the menu. The last thing I learned is that tequila is so popular in Mexico. I did not realize that it was in every cocktail. I do not like tequila, so it is a bit of a disappointment.

Would you return to the restaurant in the future? Why or why not?

I will return to this restaurant in the future. The first reason I would return is to have more of the amazing complimentary bean dip. Another reason that I would go back to this restaurant is that I liked the service. The last reason I would go back is that the portion size is really good. There was even enough food for leftovers.
